Safeguard Your Organization from the Dangers of Social Networking

Today’s fast age of instant messages can either break or make your business in areas you might not thought possible.  A good friend of mine who has several notable businesses in Orange County asked me,  “What’s all this social media and how can it help my business grow?”  My response to him was,  how many people do you have in your marketing department? He responded – 4 people; then I asked him how many people are  in his company; he  said, about 250.  I then responded with  “I can increase your marketing department by 246 people without spending an extra penny.”

In today’s work environment; most employees have emails that are not being used effectively to maximize company profits or increase their visibility out in their respective markets.  I see email addresses to some degree as cash; where if it’s not used correctly; then it does nothing for you.

To give you an another example; I recently visited my chiropractor and while waiting in the reception area; the receptionist was complaining about  how slow things were today;  so I asked her,  what do you do in the mean time and she respond; I mainly read my books.  Amazing!!!! here’s a person just sitting at her desk doing nothing useful at certain periods of her work day for the company; while she could be out in the internet promoting her bosses business.

Soon after, I started thinking about some concepts that business owners or corporate managers to know about social networking and how effectively utilize it promote your business, but you have be careful of the dangerous if you don’t have some of the following principles nailed down:

  • Controlling your employees  content
  • Make two important decisions about posting to Facebook and Twitter
  • Protect your company
  • Self regulate your posts
  • See your employees through the eyes of the internet

To put things into perspective;  Social Media is main stream now so utilize it safely!  To help understand the value of social media, I added a pretty cool video that talks about ROI and Social Media that should give you a pretty idea regarding the effectiveness on staying connected and the potential it can do for your company.  Use your internal resources effectively and watch your business grow, but protect yourself!
